This is a diet book for food addicts. Take that in. It's a DIET. For food addicts. People who are food addicts need extra help and support in discerning the whys behind their addictive eating, understanding how their underlying traumas come into play, etc., etc., and how to work with them/around them/through them to move forward. I believe fully those need to be addressed before trying to follow a stereotypical diet; at least for me, it seems to be a big hurdle as to why I've never been successful, long-term, on traditional weight loss programs. I'm still working through the foundational stuff. As such, I did not learn anything new in this book, tho I was hoping to in terms of the emotional drivers and how to get those in check before measuring out my half a cup of cottage cheese, you know?If you are completely unaware about food addictions, and how the standard American diet fosters disordered eating, and how people eat for the wrong reasons, there's some decent science here. But most of us who have been overweight a long time already know that data. And the last thing we need is another diet program with cutesy catchphrases and instructions to shake up our routine by heading to a spa for a week. Don't waste your time or money on this one.

If you have been fighting a "weight problem", as I was for the first time in my life, this book may well tell you what's happening to you and a solid scientific "why". The overall theme (if I can be so simplistic) is we humans get ourselves into an eating habit pattern which leads us to addiction, especially for sugar. Sugar has an addictive effect on many people eating it, greater than say alcohol on an alcoholic or cocaine on a drug addict. Doctor Peekes research is based on her work at the American National Health Institute and explains sugar / carbohydrate addiction and how it operates. The book lays out her recommendations on how to fight and win a long lingering weight problem caused by our sugar addiction. She offers the reader a straight forward way to bring your weight under control and keep it their - permanently. The book helped me beat a weight control problem and finally grasp the issue of food addiction at the base of the problem.
